Every one should have a way to start with the basics and a manual should be offered. REC-INC shares the ABC's of information to teach basic social skills, and understanding phrases used through the website. This information is also useful for parents and providers on how to describe and interact with people that are new to children's disabilities and its needs for recreation
Eye Contact
Looking at a person's eyes when talking or addressing question in a conversation provides audiovisual feedback that helps the individual to stay engaged. When introducing this social skill to your client or child, should be done as game that should be practiced in several occasions. Why? The child needs to associate no fears about visualization of other and items.
"For example play peekaboo and say, nice eye contact, thank you for looking at me"
Wave
This is the most basic skill that is socially accepted as first social gesture that toddlers learn. The ability to wave can help them interact, greeting people, saying goodbye, and acknowledging others. As they learn to use gestures to express themselves and understand non-verbal cues from others. Furthermore, waving can serve as a foundation for other social and communication skills and it can be delivered by modeling the action and physically holding the child's hand to start learning.
Throw and Catch
Certain gross motor skills need to be introduced with adaptations that slowly transferee the skills to a more complex movement like catch and trhow. The movements generate some of the same brain mechanisms that are also important for social skills. To successfully catch a ball, a child has to learn to pass and share a soft toy or ball. Then roll and return a ball and learn to track the trajectory of the ball to intercept it. This social skills improves with practice, and the ability to integrate visual and motor cues.
